2022 Pinot Gris

…ish Range
The …ish range is where we look outside the square and approach making wine from a different perspective unecumbered by any tradition or conventional practices. For this wine we have sourced the Burgundian Pinot Beurot clone of Pinot Gris and tried to make a style that sits, in an Aussie kind of way, between the traditional Italian ‘Grigio” style with its fesh zippy acidity and the French Alsation style with much riper richer flavours with less of that fresh acidity and is our attempt at a combination of the 2 styles.

Medium crimson in colour with purple hues. Lifted aromas of plums, red currants and boysenberries burst from the glass combined with an attractive dried herb and spice lift. The generous palate allows soft tannins to glide over the mid palate along with flavours of plum, blackberry and blackcurrent. This is an expressive, fresh and plush Merlot with a refined finish.

“This is one ripe gris, moving into the grape’s richer, textural territory. Offers a world of melon and pear, baked apple and guava with a palate that glides smooth and long, punctured by lively spice and finishing with clean, bright acidity.” JP. Halliday Wine Companion

The King Valley is one of Australia’s most exciting, emerging wine regions. It is located in North East Victoria – approximately three hours North of Melbourne and seven hours South of Sydney. Home to the most picturesque and unspoilt valley in Australia, King Valley benefits from a cool climate with extremely varied terrain, that ranges from snow-capped Alps to sun baked fields.
The 2022 vintage growing season was relatively uneventfull with good average rainfal at the right times then as vintage approached we saw excellent ripening conditions along with balanced crop loads. This has allowed us to make wines of varietal intensity, purity, balance and longevity.
The fruit for the 2022 Pinot Gris was picked on the 19th of March at a ripeness level of 13.4° baumé from the Glenmore Springs vineyard. The grapes were carefully hand picked before whole bunch pressing direct to barrel with only the free run portion kept for fermentation. This wine was wild fermented slowly at cool temperatures in older very tight grained French oak called Demi-muids holding 600 litres. Matured on yeast lees for 8 months with weekly stirring, allowed the wine to remain fresh, while providing texture and mouthfeel.
